We had a wonderful time exploring Yosemite National Park. Unfortunately, there was a fire nearby that caused smoke to come into the park.
We got some good pictures before the smoke settled in the valley and some views with the smoke. Yosemite is in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains and around 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and then tilted to form the gentle and dramatic slopes. The uplift increased the steepness of streams and river beds, resulting in formation of deep, narrow canyons. Eventually snow and ice accumulated and formed glaciers that moved down the river valleys and the movement of the ice masses cut and sculpted the U-shaped valley.
Tunnel View provides one of the most famous views of Yosemite and you can see El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall from where we were.
Bridalveil Fall is one of the most prominent waterfalls in the Yosemite Valley.
El Capitan is a vertical, granite monolith formation that is taller than 3000 vertical feet and is well know to mountain climbers.
Half Dome is a granite dome that is 5,000 feet tall and 8,800 feet above sea level and is a Yosemite icon. The flat face of half dome began to take shape when parallel vertical joints were loosened by weathering and mass wasting and fell away layer by layer and carried away by glaciers.
Glacier Point is one of the most spectacular viewpoints we've seen and Half Dome at sunset as seen from Glacier Point is breathtaking.
Yosemite Village has shops, restaurants, wildlife, camping and the Majestic Yosemite Hotel aka Ahwahnee Hotel.
