I have wrinkles, we all have wrinkles. I'm really starting to see the lines on my forehead. My friends tell me to get botox and it looks great, but it wears off and I on a boat in the Islands. It's hard to maintain a beauty regiment when living on Island Time.
But hey, a few facial lines can be endearing and add character to my face. But I would prefer to keep them in check and to a minimum. Without medical or surgical intervention, it can be challenging to reverse the appearance of wrinkles once they made an apperance. But there are things I can I can do make to slow down their appearance.
What causes wrinkles?
Skin loses elasticity as we age because collagen production slows down over time. This process can be exacerbated by a variety of factors, including sun exposure which I get everyday on this boat.
As I grow older, my skin will become thinner and drier. When skin doesn’t have as much moisture or volume as it used to, it creates wrinkles.
What can I do to prevent new wrinkles naturally?
Genetics can play a role in how skin ages. I am very lucky that I had extremely oily skin as a teeneager. I got this from my Daddy, and he always told me that I will appreciate this as I get older. Yes, yes I do Daddy and thank you.
My skin is no longer oily but that youthful, oily skin kept those pesky wrinkles away for a long time. At 50, I am just now seeing small crows feet and minimal lines on my forehead. The crows freet are from laughing so much so I won't change that because what I beautiful gift. The forehead lines are from yelling "What The F@*k?" in crazy situations on the boat. That I would trade those lines, but then I wouldn't have the great experience that I now have and appreciate on Yinsanity.
I know that taking good care of my skin will go a long way in keeping it wrinkle-free for as long as possible. So I did some research and this is what I found.
I have to protect my skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays, so it's vital that I apply an SPF of between 30 and 50 every day, even if it’s overcast. UV rays can still penetrate clouds, so I can't skip on sunscreen just because it isn’t sunny. For extra protection, I wear a visor or a wide brim hat and sunglasses with UV protection. I look the same in every picture but that's the wasy it is.
Collagen is a fibrous protein that exists naturally in the body and is responsible for maintaining the elasticity in our skin, strength in our nails & hair, and fluidity in our joint cartilage. Our bodies produce collagen regularly, however, as we age, collagen production begins to slow down after age 30. Friends have recommended Collagen powder so I'm on it and will try to find some of this as well.
Moisturizers help to nourish and hydrate the skin. This is especially important as I get older and my skin becomes drier, which makes it more prone to wrinkles. Using a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid and vitamin C are especially effective at preventing wrinkles from forming or getting deeper. I use Pomifera every day.
I have to stay hydrated because drinking water is essential for good health. The body needs water for almost every single function. Besides vital functions like flushing toxins the body, aiding with digestion, and regulating body temperature, water can also help keep my skin healthy and hydrated from the inside. Good thing I drink water like a fish. I drink between a half a gallon and a gallon of water each day.
I have to eat vitamin-rich food because I am what I eat. Dietary habits are associated with facial wrinkling. Foods that are high in anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties may also improve the skin’s elasticity and protect against skin damage and premature aging. Good thing I drink my Super Green each day with my Emergen-C and eat healthy. Weekends don't count.
It is recommended that I sleep on my back. I'm a side sleeper. Actually, I a flipper sleeper. I go from one side to the other and one knee has to be staight and the other bent. I don't know how Mike sleeps through this mess. However, I read that the sleeping positions may have an effect on the formation of wrinkles. People who sleep on their side or stomach are prone to mechanical compression forces, which can speed up the formation of wrinkles, and also distort facial skin. UGH!!! Stop it!!! One way to prevent this is to try sleeping on my back instead of on my side. I've got to figure this out. Maybe a straight jacket or a pillow where I can't run my head. This sounds aweful but I have to try it.
Repeated facial movements like squinting, frowning, or pursing of the lips can speed up the formation of wrinkles. So no smoking, no stressing, no laughing, and no smiling. Great I need Botox to do this for me. I'm a very pasionate person so I laugh hard, cry, scream, and smile a lot, so I don't know how in the world I will be able to do this. I guess I'll just have to do the JLo pose. Whoa! I need a lot of makeup to pull this look off.
I know wrinkles are part of aging, but there are things I can do to slow their progress and prevent new ones from forming and I'm going to try them all. So don't be surprised if I start looking all dramatic in pictures. I may need to learn how to do a smoky eye and better makeup techniques. As for sleeping, who knows how that will work out. Well, follow me to Filty and Fabulous.
