Rochester was one of America's first boom towns and rose to prominence as the site of many flour mills along the Genesee River. Rochester is the birthplace of many corporations such as Kodak, Bausch & Lomb and Xerox.
Rochester is a beautiful city and has so much to discover and we found the two following attractions to be our favorite.
Susan B. Anthony House
Susan B. Anthony was born February 15, 1820 in Massachusetts and she was raised in a Quaker and activist family. Anthony taught for fifteen years then she joined the women's rights movement in 1852. Soon after, she dedicated her life to woman suffrage. Anthony traveled, lectured, and canvassed across the nation for the vote while enduring abuse and condemnation. She campaigned for the abolition of slavery, the right for women to own their own property and retain their earnings, and she advocated for women's labor organizations. In 1900, Anthony persuaded the University of Rochester to admit women. Anthony never married but she was aggressive, compassionate, had a keen mind and a great ability to inspire others. She remained active and lived in the same home until her death on March 13, 1906.
Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse
America's Oldest Surviving Lighthouse on Lake Ontario and The Historic Custom House. The tower was constructed in 1822 on a hill just West of the Genesee River on the southern shores of Lake Ontario. The current Keeper’s House was built in 1863 and the Tower is 40 feet high with an additional 12 feet of height for the lantern room. There are 42 steps and then an 11 rung ladder that takes you into the lantern room.
