March 15, 2020 Countries around the world implement shutdowns in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Mike and I just got back from Australia and were in Nassau to provision it catamaran Yinsanity, when the Bahamas shut down. We were not allowed to go ashore, so I've grateful that we got everything we needed before the shut down.
We stayed anchored near Nassau for several months because we were not allowed to sail to other islands or leave the Bahamas. We had to shelter in place. So Mike fished, I learned to make bread. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and gorgeous sunsets.
While we were anchored near Nassau, the Military, Immigration, and the Police boarded Yinsanity. It was really freaky, but nice to know that we were protected.
Then, one day the Bahamas allowed for a week to leave the Bahamas if we wanted to leave. If we didn't leave, we would be such and the Embassy would not be able to protect us. There was only one hospital working with COVID parents in Nassau, so we decided it would be better for us to leave and go back to the United States. We sailed back and passed all of the ghost cruise ships that were anchored near Bimini. It was so strange.
Once we got back to the US, we anchored in Biscayne Bay for several months. Miami was shut down, so everyone got on their boats and came out to party. What COVID??? We had so many friends and family come visit us to get a break from COVID.
Once we were done with the Miami boat party scene, we sailed down to Key West. This city was completely open! Woo Hoo! We spent five months in Key West, waiting for the Bahamas to open back up. We had so much fun hanging out on Duval Street, drinking Fat Tuesday's Daiquirs, relaxing on Yinsanity with our boat neighbors, and watching the sunsets. Mike went fishing, I learned how to grow lettuce on the boat, and I also learned how to cut Mike's hair.
Then, it happened...
The covid got us on July 20, 2021 We started feeling a little achy and we lost our taste and smell. Mike's reaction was not as bad as mine. His started mainly in his head. Mike drive is up to the North Georgia Mountains so we could recover in fresh air. We camped in our camper van BB and took care of each other.
The covid moved into my lungs. It was really hard to breath. I read to walk to open the lungs. When I wasn't resting, I would walk a little bit at a time and breath in more each time. It really helped. The mornings were the toughest. I felt great laying down, but once I got up, it felt like someone punched me in the lungs. It was awful. Also the covid was tied into my emotions. Each time I cried, I would break out in fever and get the chills. So strange. I tried very hard today to not cry. It was very hard right after Mom passed and Daddy needed space, while he was coming to terms with losing Mama and his terminal cancer. It was so very hard.
I used an app on my phone and my oxygen level was 86%. When I ate anything, I would have to lay down for 30 minutes because it drained my energy. Mike and I were starting to get a little worried because I was so weak, but Mike monitored my symptoms.
Luckily the COVID only lasted four days for both of us, but it was brutal. I believe the mountain air helped tremendously. We finally felt like ourselves again.
