I have been losing my hair for several years now and I've tried everything to stop it. I was going to try Rogaine but was told once you start you can't stop. Cruising on a boat prevents me from doing a lot of things on a regular basis like getting my hair colored or purchasing Rogaine when I'm out of the country. I have to figure something else out so I did some research and this is what I found.
Visible hair loss is very distressing and affects men and women of all ages. While this condition is more common in men, women can experience thinning or complete hair loss, as well. For women, pattern hair loss occurs mostly when they are in their 50s and 60s, exactly where I'm about to be, 50. But it can get worse with age. Ugh! Each time Mike walks into the bathroom, and I'm in there, he says I'm always messing with my hair. But, I'm trying to save every strand I can with oils, conditioners, and masks.
Thinning hair in women appears gradually, usually at the part line, and increasing hair loss spreading from the top of the head. There are several causes of hair loss in women besides age, including medical conditions, like my slow working thyroid, medications, and physical or emotional stress.
Currently, there is no known way to prevent female pattern baldness but there are options like medications, topical treatments and hair transplants. I think I can take steps to prevent further hair loss or damage by trying these tips.
Avoid overdoing chemical processing
Straightening, bleaching or lightening hair can damage the hair shaft. I have been coloring my hair since high school. Blonde, Red, Black, Highlights, Lowlights, you name it and I've tried it. Except the bright colors like pink, blue, green, etc. I have pale skin and that would wash me out, so no thank you.
Age 30, I found it, the perfect shade of blonde. I have been a bleach bottle blonde ever since, for 20 years. I'm sure this damaged my hair a bit, but I didn't notice it until we started traveling, and the different climates have done havoc to my hair.
Be careful with heating tools
Curling rods, hot irons and blow dryers with brushes should be kept the lowest settings and also apply a heat-protecting spray to those locks. I gave up on heating hair equipment. I use them on the rare occations because I need it on pretty high heat to tame these curls. I only use them when we are in a city that has a nightclub or salsa dancing. I now let my hair dry naturally.
Boost my intake of foods high in vitamins
I need to have foods or supplements that are high in iron, zinc and vitamin B12 to help revitalize my thinning strands. I take Energen-C and Super Greens that are loaded with vitamins and try to eat healthy, most of the time. Weekends don't count.
Try essentials oils to condition the scalp
Massaging a few drops of rosemary, cedarwood, lavender or sage into my head can invigorate my scalp and improve my hair growth. Lucky for me I have some Lavender on the boat. Woo Hoo, I'm going to massage my scalp tonight, plus I love the small of Lavender. It's an aphrodisiac, you know! Nice!
Avoid hairstyles that pull at my strands
This is going to do me in. I'm on a boat so my hair is always up. I don't have flowing, beautiful, straight hair that looks gorgeous when it's down. That's why it's always up. It takes a lot of work to make my hair look good down, then 10 minutes later, humidity changes and it's over. I love my braids, ponytails and buns, but apparently these put too much pressure on hair and damages the follicles. Well that stinks. I will try, but I don't think this is going to work for me.
I started using Pomifera Hair Oil and I can tell a difference in my hair and I feel like less hair is falling out.
