How To See Australia's Great Barrier Reef On A Budget

I have a Life List, others call it a bucket list, but I don't want to think of it as things to do before I die, rather things to do to make life worth living. I have always wanted to visit the Great Barrier Reef, the seventh natural wonder of the world. The largest coral reef on Earth. But, it has to be on the cheap! There are other places on my life list as well. This can't kill the bank.

First, we had to fly in from Sydney as we visited there prior to Cairns. The flight was $125 each on Jetstar and the flight lasted aproximately 2 hours.

The coral reef lies a long way from the shore so to get there, we had to take a boat or helicopter. Costs for this vary greatly depending on the length of time, the level of comfort, and the amount of activities desired. There are many options for tours, but we have always used Viator.

There are also several options to visit the Great Barrier Reef, but we chose the Green Island Day Trip from Cairns Including Snorkel Tour Experience. The price of this tour was $161 each and well worth it.

This tour gave us an opportunity to experience the beautiful Great Barrier Reef with a catamaran cruise to gorgeous Green Island. We got to board the catamaran at Reef Fleet Terminal and set sail for coral reef and got to see a stunning mountainside.

First, we ordered our snorkeling gear and then got dressed and ready to explore the cay’s crystal clear waters.

We enjoyed complimentary tea, coffee, snacks, and a delicious lunch.

We got to see hundreds of fish from a glass bottom boat.

Finally, we explored Green Island and the sandy beaches with the beutiful scenery of the Cairns moutains.

You’ll also have to factor in accomodation in Cairns. We chose to use Airbnb but there are many hotels and resorts in the area. I was so shocked to find our Airbnb was backed up to the Rainforest. It was so beautiful and still only walking distance to shopping and dining. This Airbnb room advertised as Modern Room with Private Balcony in Cairns cost us $32 a night for two nights.

This was a once in a lifetime trip and a check off of my life list. The cost of the trip was $318 each or $636 total for a couple. Do you have a life list trip that you have always wanted to take? What is it? I will be happy to show you how plan it on the cheap.
