Anchorage, Alaska

My parents took me and my brother to visit my Aunt Robbie and Uncle Bill in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1977. I was just a kid and had the best time, but it was freaking cold.

I remember hanging out around the ski lodge and café while my Mom and Daddy went skiing. We would run around and play in the snow, go sledding on plastic toboggans, and drink lots of hot cocoa.

But, when we go back to my Uncle Bill's house, my feet were frozen, like on the verge of frostbite. This Alabama girl did not come prepared for freezing temps. However, hanging out by the fireplace and eating smores is all a kid needs to have great memories.

Mount McKinley now known at Denali National Park

Seeing the mammoth mountains surrounding us was the very best. I just loved how large everything was. There was so much snow everywhere and it was brilliant, white. Simply amazing.

Mining for Gold

There was a stream that ran behind my uncles house and we just walked outside with our pans and started catching small gold rocks as they came down the river. Gold mining is not just a part of Alaska's past, but it is still an important activity in many areas of the state today and it's really fun. My Uncle kept the gold we collected each day, then we took it to a jewler and had it made into a keep sake. What a great memory!

Glaciers

I got to see some amazing and huge glaciers as a kid in Alaska. I had no clue that they would be melting in the future so I'm really so grateful to my parents for giving me the opportunity to see something so beautiful.
