Creative Expression

I remember making art as a little girl and school and at home. I would pick a piece of floor or my Mom's dining room table or my desk at school and I would lose myself as I became engrossed in my task. Immersed in a sea of paints, crayons, construction paper, brown paper bags and popsicle sticks. All of my senses were engaged. Do you remember that? The smell of the crayons, the feel of wet paint or glitter glue on fingers, the sound of coloring or of our own rhythmic breathing as we focused on a task that grounded us to our mission. I remember being so happy with a sense of pride and accomplishment at having completed my task and telling a story.

Later, as teenagers, I loved to write poetry or song lyrics, draw cartoons and I surely loved to lose myself in journals. If you remeber these things too, it was our way to communicate our inner selves to the world. That communication has intrinsic value. It connects us to others, to a community. It allows us tobe a part of a community by sharing a story.

Then we moved into the adult mode of life and now some of us are not as creative because of work, family, stress, etc. Just know that we all have the knowledge inside ourselves about what we need to heal and find happiness. Taking time to be creative helps heal trauma, reduces stress, and creates a happy aura.

Here are ways that we can introduce creative expression back into our lives.

Draw or paint our emotions. We will focus entirely on painting what we're feeling.

Make a journal. Journals don't have to just be based around words. We can make an art journal as well

Photograph things that are beautiful. No one else has to like them but us. Print and frame them to have constant reminders of the beautiful things in life.

Invent something crazy. This invention should do something that can help make us happy.

Draw a comic strip. Let’s focus in on a comical event that really happened.

Build a website. I’ve already done this, but give it a go, express yourself.
