Convict Lake, Mammoth Lakes, California

Rugged peaks and Laurel Mountain rising almost 5,000 feet above Convict Lake create a stunning alpine backdrop. Rainbow trout thrive, luring fisherman to the water, and an easy hiking trail circles the lake, providing access to a variety of beaches. There's overnight parking and a public campground nearby, a day-use picnic area and a marina with boat rentals and launching. Convict Lake Resort has a store, restaurant, and cabins.

Convict Lake and Creek are so named as the result of an AMBUSH encounter here September 17, 1871, when a group of inmates escaped from prison in Carson City. Sheriff George Hightower eventually caught up with the convicts and a shoot out took place.
